Crazy Sexy Cancer Coming Soon to DVD

Written by Oprah Fangirl on Thursday, October 18th, 2007 in Oprah.

Crazy Sexy Cancer DVDKriss Carr’s Crazy Sexy Cancer is coming to Oprah tomorrow, and I can’t wait to see her talk about it. Crazy Sexy Cancer is an uplifting, fun, eye-opening, issue hitting documentary about one woman’s battle with cancer (a rare vascular disease called epithelioid hemangioendothelioma) and how she traveled across the country searching for someone or something to help with her disease, and found more than she bargained for in the many “crazy, sexy, vibrant, loving, normal, sparkly” women with cancer who were determined to be survivors.

Crazy Sexy Cancer brings humanity to a disease that affects so many of us. If you don’t battle cancer in your lifetime, you will know someone close to you who has. Kriss shines a light on cancer and brings it out of the dark to be explored, as terrible as it is. In the meantime, she teaches us that cancer can’t rob us of our charisma, sexyness and love unless we let it. Buy the DVD Oprah raves about exclusively at Gaiam, or read the book, available on Amazon.

Dr Oz on Oprah and His YOU on a Diet Book

Written by Oprah Fangirl on Friday, March 23rd, 2007 in Oprah.

Remember last November when Oprah had Dr. Oz on the show? I thought that was a great show, and since it happened before I started this blog… I figured it was worth a revisit.

Doctor OZ YOU on a Diet BookDr. Oz says he can help you drop a dress size in ten days, safely and without weight loss drugs. He talked about “The Biology of Blubber” and which five ingredients to avoid. Oprah also featured a few gym-free 20 minute workout videos recommended by Dr. Oz.

So here’s my double question: Did YOU buy his book, “YOU: On a Diet” and did it work for you? My guess is it did. But only if you followed the directions. How do I know? Everything he mentions is common sense. Then again, maybe it just “seems” like common sense because it’s good advice. Let’s explore:

Know Your Body
Understand how your internal organs work. Get a grasp on your endocrine system, and the digestive process. (My thoughts: They should have taught you this stuff in grade school health class. If you don’t know it, losing weight is the least of your problems.)

Waist is More Important than Weight
This is because muscle weights more than fat, and you can be losing fat and building muscle at the same time. (My thoughts: It makes sense that you can lose weight and gain muscle when first starting an exercise program, but eventually – and soon – you will have to choose one or the other. Why? Because it takes a caloric deficit to lose fat, and an excess of proteins to gain muscle. Finding a balance that allows you to do both is something bodybuilders spend all day on. And you probably have better things to do. Right?)

Stay Satisfied
The idea is not to starve yourself. To lose weight, you need to eat. It might now seem to make sense but it does. (My thoughts: Crash and fad diets require you to practically starve yourself, if not of food than at least of nutrients (Cabbage diet? Yea right…). When your body senses that it is starving, the natural reaction is to slow down the metabolism. Thus, when you come “off” your diet, the rebound can put you in a larger dress size than when you started).

Those are just a few of the ideas outlined in YOU On a Diet by Dr. Oz. They all seem to make perfect sense to me. Are they “common” sense though? Only if you can tell me the difference off the top of your head between saturated fats, unsaturated fats, monosaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats.

So what’s your excuse for not working out? No time? No Gym? Wrong! Here is Dr. Oz’s kill-your-excuse page on Oprah.
